The Laboratory of Photobiology of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) is settled in the UFSM campus (INPE building, rooms 3010 and 3011) at Santa Maria, in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil.

Coordinated by professor André Passaglia Schuch (Ph.D.), the laboratory develops activities of basic research in the areas of Photobiology, Ecotoxicology, and DNA Repair. Our team has students of postdoc, Ph.D., Master and Scientific Initiation (See Team). We use different approaches and methodologies in our investigations, which are focused on both human health and environmental issues (See Scientific Publications).

Among the methodologies of our laboratory, the use of a DNA dosimeter system allows the detection and quantification of DNA damage induced by solar ultraviolet radiation, which is the primary cause of skin cancer and aging. This technology is used in effectiveness monitoring tests of commercial sunscreens (See Products and Services).
